It’s a cold, snow-covered day here on Long Island. We got about a foot of snow in these parts, and in the county over (Suffolk), they had to send in the National Guard! Fortunately, we didn’t lose power, and I got a mini-workout in last night thanks to the property managers. It could have also just been the exquisite decision-making skills of the snow plow drivers, who had the wherewithal to plow the parking lot to our complex, and yet decided to plow ALL the cars in the lot into their spaces with over two feet of snow! Thankfully, I’d bought a shovel a few weeks back, and dug my car out before heading to get gas, and then to get groceries late last night once both the snowfall and the wind subsided…
Today, I want to touch on an email I received yesterday. While I’ll keep the sender’s name private, I recognized it from a question I’d been asked the previous day on Quora. For those of you unfamiliar, Quora is a site where you can ask questions about literally ANYTHING, and ‘experts’ will respond to this question. I’m one of the leading experts in the health and weight loss space on the site, so I get quite a few questions on a daily basis. At the end of each one of my answers, I always give the questioner’s my email address if they have further questions on their specific topic.
Here’s the email I yesterday morning:
Look, I get it – Once we get to that point where we’ve had enough, we want to lose all the weight we’ve gained as quickly as possible! Often, we’ll turn to crash diets and killer workout programs that can definitely assist in shedding a great deal of weight in a short period of time. That being said, you’re definitely going to want to see my response to the sender before moving in that direction:
What I laid out to this person is so true! To elaborate on the last paragraph of my email, what does virtually every Biggest Loser finalist have to do towards the end of the show? They have to get skin removal surgery! The show would lead you to believe that this is normal for folks who are severely overweight, but that is FAR from the truth…
Between myself (who’s lost 100 lbs) and many of my clients who have lost 50 or more, there’s NEVER a need for this type of procedure if you go about things the right way. What’s the right way? Glad you asked!
First, Mindset. You have to be in this for the long haul. This isn’t just a diet, or a quick fix strategy – This is a LIFESTYLE change! Without your acknowledging and understanding this principle, you’re NEVER going to sustainably lose the weight and keep it off.
Second, Nutrition. Eat meats, non-starchy vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, low-glycemic fruits, little starch and no (added) sugar. Eat ONLY when hungry, and just to satisfy – NOT to stuff your face.
Third, Sleep. Get either 7.5 or 9 hours. Be in bed half an hour BEFORE you aim to start your sleep cycle. Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and devoid of electronic devices that can keep you up.
Lastly, Fitness. There is no perfect exercise methodology. The best one(s) for you is (are) the one(s) that you can stick to! If you enjoy hiking, do more of that! If it’s biking, then that!! Get my drift? You’ll also want to continue to diversify your methods of fitness, and continue to challenge yourself. Otherwise, your body will adapt to the regular demands being placed on it, and you’ll cease to see results.
Go about this the right way, and you’ll not only be pleased with your short-term results, but with how easy it is to maintain those results for the rest of your life 😉
Have a good weekend!
P.S. Start your year off right, and join my NEW Permanent Weight Loss group on Facebook. This group is piggybacking off the Holiday Jump Start Program I did for eight weeks this past fall, and is something that many of the group members wanted to continue going into the future!
This group provides members with daily accountability, a weekly group call specific to the members and their questions, a monthly book club reviewing a piece of literature on all things health and wellness, and a lifetime’s worth of mindset shifts and lifestyle changes via the book club, my coaching, and my personal materials on fitness, mindset, and nutrition. It’s BY FAR the most affordable program I’ve offered to date, and may be just what you need to kick yourself into gear in 2018.
