It was a cool, sunny day here on Long Island, and after a morning filled with client appointments, I’m in the process of preparing for my Weight Loss Accountability Group call tonight. Every Wednesday night at 7 PM EST, my group members and I hop on a Zoom video conferencing call to discuss their personal questions for the week. The topics can range all over the place, but tonight’s call is obviously going to be about staying strong during Christmas, and in the week leading up to the New Year.
Speaking of which, I was on a Strategy Call with a prospective client earlier today, and he asked me if it was even possible to eat clean during the holidays. I was stunned! Now, I understand that if you’re going to a family gathering, and if your family tradition is to pig out together on less-than-stellar food options during the upcoming holiday(s), that this task may seem virtually impossible.
That being said, when there’s a will, there’s a way, and I’m about to arm you with the same advice I armed him with (Don’t worry – I got his permission before posting this)!
Below you’ll find my Top 3 Recommendations for getting through the holidays unscathed:
Recommendation 1: Plan Ahead!
I don’t think you’re going to unexpectedly get abducted in front of your home and tied down to a chair that just so happens to be in front of a holiday feast on Christmas Day. There won’t be one person on one side of your defenseless body holding your mouth open, while another shoves junk down your gullet. Seriously – When has this sort of thing EVER happened to you in your life?! (If this sort of thing HAS happened to you, then you’re into some freaky shit, and I apologize for whatever scarred you as a child…)
All kidding aside, who controls what food and drink you ingest? YOU DO! And who shows up to a holiday party that they didn’t know about at least 24 hours in advance? NO ONE!
So, plan ahead!! If you know that there are going to be some healthy options at Christmas Dinner, then have that instead of the crap. If you know that there aren’t going to be healthy options, then bring one with you! I’m sure your host or hostess won’t mind you lightening the load of all they have to do on the big day a little bit with a dish that can be shared with everybody.
This coincides with my first recommendation of planning ahead, and it can make all the difference! One of the most common tips I give my Permanent Weight Loss clients is to eat in advance of a social gathering they’re attending. This way, they’re not nearly as tempted to binge on the hors d’oeuvre and desserts that are readily available for attendees, and they can enjoy their holiday parties without any guilt!
Recommendation 3: Bring Your Own Food and Drink!
I also mentioned this in Recommendation 1, but if you know that you’re going to be at your holiday party for a while, and that you’re going to need to eat and drink something other than water, then be proactive and bring your own food and drink to the gathering. While some people can get pissy about your bringing things, act as if you’re going to share it with everyone (even if you’re not!).
Buy a bottle of dry red wine, gin, or tequila (my Trio of Terror!), and say that it’s for anyone at the party who wanted to have some, as well.
Same with the healthy dish(es) you’d bring – Make enough for everyone, and then you’re covered! What kind of rude host or hostess will deny your alleviating the burden? Here’s a hint: A LUNATIC!! P.S. With both Christmas and New Years on the horizon, my schedule is lightening up a bit over the next couple of weeks. If you’re READY to take that first step on your health and weight loss journey, and you have 25 or more lbs to lose, then let’s chat!
With 10 years of experience, SEVEN different fitness and nutrition certifications, and a sustained weight loss of 100 lbs., I think I know a thing or two about this Permanent Weight Loss thing 😉
