It’s a beautiful, fall day here on Long Island, and I write this to you from my parents’ home. Every Tuesday and Friday, I visit my hometown of Port Washington, NY, and work with my grandmother on rehab from hip replacement surgery last summer, and my dad on improving his strength, tone, and overall cardiovascular health.
Today, I want to discuss the importance of making your health a priority – Both during this holiday season, as well as throughout the year. The following message may seem a bit biased since I obviously work in the health industry, but it’s an important message for you to consider nonetheless (that is, if you haven’t considered it already!)…
One of the most common objections I hear from a prospective client is about the price of services. I can tell right away within the first few lines of a Strategy Session whether or not a person is serious about their journey or not. If we hop on a call, exchange normal pleasantries, and then I’m immediately immediately bombarded with a prospect say something along the lines of ‘Before we move discuss any further, I need to know your pricing,’ then I know that the likelihood of us working together is slim-to-none.
At first, you’d think the prospect’s thinking is reasonable – Unless you’re a big fan of racking up credit card debt, then you’ll obviously shop around and try to find the best deal on most goods and services you purchase on a regular basis. Why should you treat your search for a health coach any differently?
BECAUSE YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR GREATEST ASSET!
If you’re healthy and if you consistently practice healthy lifestyle habits for the rest of your life, then not only will your personal quality-of-life improve, but your ability to do your job, to be a better parent or spouse, etc., goes through the roof tremendously!
My most successful clients have come from both great and rough financial situations. While I like to think that I offer a range of programs so that just about anybody can work with me (to learn more, go to www.weightlossbypete.com/services), I’ll still get the price objection from folks who are allegedly interested in my most affordable packages. And look, I get it – It’s tough out there! You shouldn’t be paying for a product or a service that you cannot afford…
That being said, my ‘cheapest’ program starts at $85 per month. You mean to tell me that if you had the chance to go through both your bank and your credit card statements from the past month, that you couldn’t find some current, frivolous expenses to cut that could get you that $85, and perhaps a whole lot more to allocate towards HELPING you? Unless you’re on the verge of being evicted from your home or you’re on food stamps, I call BS!
I’ll admit that based upon my certifications, my education, and my experience in all things fitness, health, mindset, and nutrition-related, I’m not the cheapest guy around. That being said, I try to give back by having a FREE group online (check out the Permanent Weight Loss Community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pwl50plus/), as well as a VERY affordable accountability group that I opened at the beginning of this month (check out my Weight Loss Accountability Group here: www.weightlossbypete.com/group).
One of the most common EXCUSES for a bad diet and a lack of exercise is a scarcity of funds with which to purchase the foods and services necessary to reach your goals. Let’s be real: It’s actually CHEAPER to buy and cook your own meals at home, and it’s also CHEAPER to invest in a gym membership over streaming services like Netflix ($10 per month for Planet Fitness, versus the new, higher rate of $13.99 per month for Netflix starting in 2018). Even if you don’t want to go to a gym, there are a million FREE programs you can download through a simple Google Search (if you’re reading this, you have access to the Internet, right?).
So, what’s the REAL reason people are foregoing the cooking, the grocery shopping, and the exercise on a regular basis? Some would argue that it’s time, but I’d instead argue that it’s convenience…
It’s so much easier to get food from a McDonald’s Drive-Thru or a local pizzeria than to first understand good quality nutrition, then find a recipe, then go to the store, then purchase groceries, and finally, spend time prepping a meal for either yourself or for your family. It doesn’t matter if this can save you up to half your money on a similarly designed (and HEALTHIER) meal, since this isn’t the more convenient approach.
It’s also more convenient to sit on the couch and watch Netflix, or if you’re a little more proactive, to buy fitness DVDs or to invest in fitness apps that enable you to stream workouts right from your TV. While I’m certainly NOT a proponent of investing in a gym membership if you have just a little bit of space at home with which you can exercise, it would behoove you (unless, of course, you’re already well-versed on the fitness front) to have a little more personalized guidance at the start of your journey. Having a fit-pro walk you through a physical consult and having him/her design a program that’s based around building up your current functional deficiencies is much more beneficial to YOU than a generic fitness DVD that’s not based around anybody in particular.
From a purely logic-based standpoint, I’d rather invest both my time and my money in my health NOW than to play Russian Roulette with it, and potentially throw my life’s savings at treatments to save myself when I may already be too far gone. Some people may be content putting their heads in the sand at the inevitable, and some may even get lucky in that nothing serious will ever happen to them despite poor lifestyle habits, but with one in two Americans suffering from AT LEAST one chronic disease, I’m not personally going to take that chance.
The question is: Will you?
P.S. As I mentioned earlier, I just opened up a NEW group on Facebook. This is piggybacking off the Holiday Jump Start Program I did for the past eight weeks, and is something that many of the group members wanted to continue going into the future!
This group provides members with daily accountability, a weekly group call specific to the members and their questions, and a lifetime’s worth of mindset shifts and lifestyle changes via both my coaching, our monthly book circle, and my materials on fitness, mindset, and nutrition. It’s BY FAR the most affordable program I’ve offered to date, and may be just what you need to kick yourself into gear with the Holiday Season in full swing.
