What if I told you that this one SIMPLE thing can make all the difference between success or failure on your health and weight loss journey?
It’s a sunny afternoon here on Long Island, and after I’m done writing this to you, I have a couple of evening appointments before I prepare to head out to Connecticut early tomorrow morning. For the next two days, I’ll be attending a mastermind event to help me continue to expand my reach. The last event helped me rebrand my service from Fitness Retriever (Ha! Remember that?) to Weight Loss by Pete, so I know I’m going to get AT LEAST one golden nugget that will continue to help get the good Permanent Weight Loss word out there 😉
Now then, back to the pile…
It’s tough going at it alone. If you’re looking to make a positive change, but the person(s) you’re living with aren’t onboard, then that can make sticking to a healthier lifestyle a whole lot more challenging!
I’ve worked with clients whose spouses would literally come home with pizza, fried chicken and other awful foods, and would literally sit there and eat those foods in front of them, no doubt tempting them to break down and give up on their journey.
We have one word, and one word only for people like that: Assholes!
But, let’s face it – When you get resistance, that means you’re doing something right. This isn’t just true online, but in every facet of your life. If you go out with friends to a bar and you decide to either not drink at all (the best decision), or to limit yourself to a glass of dry red wine when everybody else wants to split pitchers of beer, you may get some flack.
‘What happened? Are you not a man (obviously, this applies if you’re a man)?! Are you BETTER or CLASSIER than the rest of us?!!’
Or, if you used to order an appetizer at a certain restaurant on date night with hubby or wifey, but instead of splitting it with your hubby or wifey, you ordered a salad to start.
‘Are you seriously not even going to enjoy this one meal with me?!’
Bullshit like this will happen all the time, which is why if you’re significant other or your friends aren’t on this journey with you, then you need to find someone who is!
Accountability partners are almost 100% ESSENTIAL to coming out on top. It’s hard to hear coming from me, since I didn’t really have one on my 100 lb weight loss journey. Sure, people gave me advice and nuggets along the way, but there wasn’t someone I was checking in with regularly to gauge my progress.
That being said, one of the things I’ll repeat until the day I die is that IF I had an accountability partner on my journey, then the chances of me losing those 100 lbs SOONER would have been much greater!
Your accountability partner can be someone close to you, but this isn’t absolutely essential. They can be striving towards the same goal, though this, too, isn’t absolutely essential. What’s essential are these two things:
1) He or she knows your SMART goals pertaining to both your health and your weight. Examples of applicable SMART goals include ‘Losing 40 lbs in the next six months,’ ‘Losing two dress sizes by ‘x’ date,’ etc., and
2) He or she has set a REGULAR time for you two to check-in about how you’re doing with everything. This can be daily, weekly, or even monthly. In my opinion, the more regular the better, so opt for either the daily or, at the very least, the weekly option.
I do this with EVERY SINGLE ONE of my Permanent Weight Loss clients – NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Every single one of my clients logs their food, which I check on every single morning. The same is true of their fitness programs – EVERY morning, 24/7/365. If they miss logging in, they’ll hear about it. If their eating is off, they’ll hear about it. If they’re skipping workouts for no good reason (outside of illness or injury, there is NO good reason!), they’ll hear about it.
What does this insure? CONSISTENCY in their actions, and thus, CONSISTENT RESULTS!!!
